AcceleNet® Software-based WAN Optimizer Breaks More New Ground

Central management makes AcceleNet the right fit for large-scale enterprises and service providers

October 19, 2009

ViaSat Inc. (Nasdaq:VSAT) subsidiary Intelligent Compression Technologies Inc. (ICT) is introducing a new release of AcceleNet® at the Gartner Symposium/ITxpo 2009, that includes a central manager for large-scale deployments, optimization for soft phones and virtual desktops, and cost-effective branch office acceleration. Now the AcceleNet software-based WAN optimization controller (SoftWOC) provides even the largest corporate enterprises and managed services providers with a cost-effective application accelerator for mobile, telecommuting, and branch office workers.

As the industry’s first SoftWOC, award-winning AcceleNet has pioneered a series of software client-based acceleration features, including maximizing throughput across lower-quality commercial and wireless networks and optimizing secured application traffic. With this new release, AcceleNet establishes a new industry-first in its ability to manage large networks down to the individual user level, and adds new optimizations for voice and remote access applications.

Central manager ensures visibility and control across large-scale networks
With the AcceleNet Manager, customers can now manage hundreds of thousands of users, and all of their AcceleNet servers, from a single central management interface. Administrators can use the Manager to analyze application traffic, and view performance at the system level, or drill down to a server farm, single server, group of users, or a single user. AcceleNet servers may be deployed on virtual machines and each AcceleNet server now supports up to 8,000 concurrent users.

Windows 7 compatibility creates comprehensive branch office optimization
With Microsoft Windows® 7 compatibility, the new AcceleNet software release expands its platform support. Windows 7 BranchCache allows a file downloaded by one branch office worker to be stored for use by other workers without downloading it across the WAN. Combining the Windows 7 BranchCache feature with the industry-leading, first-time download performance of AcceleNet, the accelerated uploads and application optimizations create a cost-effective and easy-to-deploy alternative to acceleration appliances for branch offices.

New optimizations enable virtual desktops and soft phones
To simplify PC management, enhance security, and simplify operating system migrations, organizations are embracing virtual desktop infrastructure (VDI), and are looking for ways to implement these applications while ensuring that remote users are able to work productively. AcceleNet optimizations for the VDI, RDP, and Citrix protocols improve responsiveness, screen rendering, and document scrolling, mitigating the effects of latency.
For organizations replacing physical phones with soft phones, AcceleNet eliminates voice call degradation caused by emails and other background data transfers for a consistent, toll-quality voice experience.

New economic and business trends heighten need for remote work option
“New economic and business drivers are increasing the popularity of software-based WAN optimization products, such as AcceleNet,” said Ken Gamache, general manager of Massachusetts Operations at ViaSat. “The weak economy favors technology that produces a fast return on investment and cost-saving initiatives like teleworking and Internet telephony. And, as organizations embrace the next wave of server consolidation and cloud computing, acceleration of virtual desktops and cloud-hosted applications will be required to meet user demand for office-like performance.”

The new AcceleNet release will be demonstrated in booth #415 of the Gartner Symposium/ITxpo 2009 this week and is available immediately for trial; production shipments will begin in December 2009.
